The Airbnb movement has gained momentum in recent years. There are more than six million locations listed on Airbnb worldwide. Approximately 2.25 million of those are located in the United States alone. Those 2.25 million properties account for almost 100 million nights a year. Full-time residents at the Jersey Shore understand how quickly summer rentals fill up here. But with this increase in Airbnb rentals, we also see people coming in for overnight stays throughout the rest of the year (aka “daytrippers”). Unlike other cities in the Jersey Shore area, Ventnor does not have a minimum stay requirement. The Commissioner’s Board is considering adding this requirement to the Ventnor short-term rental market. Do you agree? If so, what should the minimum be?

Ventnor Short-Term Rental Changes
Currently, Airbnb lists more than 400 Ventnor properties on its site. Margate requires a one-week minimum for short-term rentals. Other cities in the area set a two to a three-day minimum. As I said before, Ventnor has no such minimum in place. Because of this, we see many single-night renters. Unfortunately, that means that we see some disorderly and reckless guests. That creates problems with noise, trash, and parking for Ventnor residents. To reduce the chances for these issues to arise, Commissioners are considering instilling at least a two to three-day minimum rental requirement ASAP. If approved, this requirement goes into effect as early as the 2023 summer rental season.
All Ventnor homeowners are encouraged to come to the meeting at City Hall on Thursday, February 9th to voice their opinion on the matter. This includes Airbnb owners as well. Please mark this on your calendar to make sure you don’t miss your opportunity to let the Commissioners know what you think.
