I hope everyone enjoyed their 4th. Where did you watch the fireworks at the Jersey Shore? The boardwalk? The beach? Your house? Well, now that that holiday has passed, let’s talk news. In particular, Jersey Shore summertime news. There’s quite a bit to discuss. So, let’s get started.
Jersey Shore Summertime News
Ventnor’s DWI Checkpoints
In an effort to keep Ventnor’s roads safe, police are cracking down on drunk drivers. They plan on setting up several DWI checkpoints around town. For a first-time offender in New Jersey, you lose your license for three months, spend at least 12 hours in jail (or as many as 30 days), and pay $250 to $400 in fines among other things. Plus, you pay a $1000 annual surcharge on your car insurance for three years. School zones nab you even stiffer penalties and fees. A second DWI citation increases those fees to between $500 and $1000, guarantees you 30 days of community service after you spend up to 90 days in jail, suspension of your driver’s license for at least two years, and a $3000 annual surcharge on your auto insurance for the next three years. A third-time offense guarantees you even stiffer fines, at least 180 days of jail time, a 10-year suspension of your license, and a $4500 surcharge on your insurance for each of the next three years. The moral of the story? Don’t drink and drive. It’s not worth it. Get a designated driver or call Uber instead.
EV Charging Stations at the Jersey Shore
You heard that right. We will soon be seeing charging stations for electric vehicles in and around our Jersey Shore neighborhoods. Both Ventnor and Longport have plans in place to install these EV charging stations in the upcoming months. First, Ventnor’s planning a Level 2 station behind City Hall and a Level 3 station next to the Cultural Arts Center. In Longport, they plan to install a Level 2 charger behind Borough Hall. A Level 2 station takes one hour to charge for a 10 to 15-mile distance. The Level 3 station fully charges an EV battery in 20 to 60 minutes. This is great news for EV owners. Charge your battery while you shop, dine, or spend the day at the beach.
Longport’s 125th Anniversary Celebration
Later this month, Longport celebrates its 125th anniversary. Officials are planning a huge celebration and they want you to come. Tickets are on sale right now for the July 22nd event. They cost $30 for adults ages 11+ and $15 for kids. Purchase your tickets at Borough Hall or via the VIPLY app. That’s the same app you use to purchase your beach tags. But you better do it now. Ticket sales end on July 10th.
Turtle Time at the Shore
Finally, don’t forget to keep an eye out for little turtle mamas crossing our roadways this summer. They take this treacherous route to get to the beach to lay their eggs every summer. Unfortunately, this also happens during the busiest time of the year for the Jersey Shore…summertime! So, please be mindful when riding down our Jersey Shore thoroughfares this summer.
