“Hurricane season” at the Jersey Shore starts at the beginning of June and runs through the end of November. Since June 1st lurks just around the corner, the AC Office of Emergency Preparedness wants the public to know that they recently updated their hurricane emergency notification system. As such, they highly recommend that residents sign up for it as soon as possible.
Hurricane Emergency Notification
Anyone who has lived at the Jersey Shore for any amount of time knows how quickly Mother Nature can turn on you. Atlantic County offers an emergency alert system to keep all registered members abreast of any inclement weather that may turn deadly if ignored. When you sign up for their emergency alert system, you choose whether to receive an alert via email, text, TTY, or via the Code Red mobile app. These alerts tell you whether you need to evacuate the area, shelter-in-place, or even if issues arise with the local drinking water that require you to boil it first. The system also alerts for non-emergency issues, such as major accidents on the roadways, missing person alerts, or centralizes police or fire activity in the area (such as the fire at the Atlantic City Boardwalk last week). Sign up for the free alert system either online here or by texting ATLCO-OEM to 34639 and then follow the prompts given. You may also download the Code Red app via Google Play (for Android users) or via the Apple Store (for i-Phone users).
Turtle Time at the Jersey Shore
Before I go, I want to leave you with this quick reminder. Turtle nesting season is upon us at the Jersey Shore. Keep an eye out for mama turtles crossing the road whenever you drive along the Causeway. Watch for turtle crossing signs as well. The Margate Terrapin Rescue Project needs as many volunteers as possible to help them mend barriers and dig trenches on Saturday, May 4th. If you would like to help, please visit the rescue project’s website here to sign up.
Defend Brigantine Beach Fundraiser
Finally, I want to thank everyone who came out for the Atlantic County Earth Day 2024 fundraiser held at Provenza last weekend. We ate some great food and sipped some wonderful champagne. Also, the guest speakers provided excellent information. If you have any questions about what you can do to support our fight against offshore wind turbines in our beach communities, please feel free to contact me at any time.
