Anyone who knows me knows how much I love our local turtles. My work with the Margate Terrapin Rescue Project goes back several years. With summer only a short few weeks away, we expect our population to swell. Unfortunately, that also coincides with our local mama turtles’ egg-laying season. Gather round, folks. It’s time for a little Margate turtle talk.
Margate Turtle Talk
If you were unaware, turtle nesting season runs from late spring to early summer at the Jersey Shore. In other words, you should start seeing turtles crossing the Margate Causeway at any time now. Mama turtles come from the bay in search of a safer, higher ground to lay their eggs. Unfortunately, this journey is full of obstacles with the main one being crossing the busy causeway. To keep them safe, volunteers (of which I am one) maintain corrugated barriers along the roads to keep our little terrapin friends safe. This year, we plan on fixing and maintaining this area on Saturday, May 4th. And we need as many people helping as possible. Could that be you?
Beginning at 8 am on May 4th, volunteers meet up next to the toll bridge at Margate Causeway Park. We need people to help dig trenches, install fencing, and secure our turtle barriers along the Causeway. Make it a family day. There will be age-appropriate chores for everyone from eight to 108. All you need to do is sign up at the Margate Terrapin Rescue Project’s website. Once there, you must sign a waiver and let us know how many people will be attending. I’d love to see you there!
Margate Free Paper Shredding Event
According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, almost 24 million people became victims of identity theft in 2021 alone. Old financial documents tossed out in the trash provide a treasure trove of information for thieves. Even a regular home paper shredder may not offer enough protection from them. Next Saturday (April 27th) from 9 am to 12 pm, bring any of the papers you wish to securely shred over to the Margate Public Works Garage located at 101 N. Benson Ave. The City provides this service to both Margate and Longport residents. However, you must provide proof of residency first. Make sure that none of the papers include paper clips, binders, or staples as they get tossed into the shredder right there on site. Shredding services are offered absolutely free of charge.
Save the Jersey Shore From Eco-Killing Wind Turbines
I cannot express how sad and disappointed I was to find out about the lack of progress from our local government regarding the installation of wind turbines off our beautiful shoreline. Even so, those of us involved in the fight to protect and preserve our local ecosystem continue to fight on. You can help by joining us at the Earth Day Brunch Fundraiser hosted by Defend Brigantine Beach this Sunday, April 21st at Provenza. Get your tickets now by scanning the QR code in this post or visiting the ticket website here. Great food. Incredible information. And a splash of bubbly for the grown-ups. I really hope to see you there!
