With Super Bowl LVIII just two weeks away, many people are upgrading their televisions to accommodate the viewing parties they plan on throwing. That got me thinking about what happens to the old TVs when you finish with them. After all, the ACUA will not pick these items up with your regular curbside pickup. Also, New Jersey’s ElectronicWaste Management Act does not allow NJ residents to simply toss them in the trash. As I’ve said before, 2024 is the year I’m focusing on improving Earth’s health. (Check out ways in which you can reduce your plastic use here.) What do you do with your electronics recycling at the Jersey Shore? Read on to find out.
Electronics Recycling at the Jersey Shore
As I stated above, the ACUA (Atlantic County Utilities Authority) takes care of household waste. But by law, they cannot take care of disposing of e-waste. What exactly is e-waste? Anything electronic, such as computers, laptops, monitors, speakers, scanners, printers, modems, keyboards, and, of course, TVs. However, these constitute only a few of the many electronic items deemed “e-waste”.
Where to Recycle Your E-Waste in Atlantic County
Fortunately, several places accept electronics for recycling at their facilities. For example, any Apple store accepts old Apple products for recycling. Best Buy accepts old cell phones as well as many other electronic items. (Some may include a handling fee for disposal. Just ask one of the Geek Squad for more info.) Staples takes in monitors, laptops, computer towers, ink cartridges, toner cartridges, and cell phones among other things. For a complete list of where you can take your TV or other electronics for recycling at the Jersey Shore, visit the ACUA’s website here. They include resources for residents and businesses as well as where to drop off your shattered TV.
The ACUA picks up household electronics once a month in Margate and Longport. However, you must call first to schedule the pickup. For Margate, they pick up on the first Tuesday of the month. Call (609) 822-5038 to schedule your pick-up. In Longport, they come on the first Monday of the month. To schedule, call (609) 823-2731 x114. Unfortunately, these monthly pick-ups are not available through ACUA in Ventnor or Atlantic City. However, Ventnor residents may bring their e-waste to the same locations that Margate residents take theirs.
Your contribution to keeping our community safe and clean is always appreciated and helps everybody out. So, thank you.
