In the summer, thousands of people flock to the Jersey Shore. Beautiful beaches provide endless hours of fun. But I bet you did not know that some people enjoy fishing at our South Jersey shores as well. It’s true. Our shores provide a healthy habitat for flukes (fluke season begins on May 22nd), stripers, kingfish, weakfish, and bluefish. So, before you start your Jersey Shore fishing this summer, here is some information that you might find helpful.
Jersey Shore Fishing Info
Ventnor Fishing Pier
First up for your Jersey Shore fishing info is the Ventnor Fishing Pier. It officially opens for business tomorrow, April 20th. Visit the Ventnor Pier offices between 8 am and 6 pm to purchase your daily pass or annual membership. Daily passes cost between $5 (for seniors 62+ and kids ages 10-17) and $10 (adults ages 18+). For the avid fishermen (and women), an annual membership might prove a better deal. They cost $50 for kids, $150 for seniors, and $175 for adults. If you simply want to enjoy a day at the pier without fishing, an annual spectator pass costs $50 per person.
The Ventnor Fishing Pier is the longest in the entire state. It offers gorgeous views to watch the sun come up or go down every single day. They only accept cash or checks at the pier. If you need more information before you head out to the pier, call (609) 823-7944.
Other Locations Along the Jersey Shore
Most of the areas along the shore allow surf fishing. New Jersey Fish and Wildlife provides a great fishing guide for anyone wanting to do some surf fishing at the Jersey Shore. Atlantic City allows you to fish on the jetty in 60 feet of water. Or, if you prefer drier conditions, try one of several locations on the Boardwalk. If you wish to take a group of people out fishing, rent or charter a boat in Brigantine, Atlantic City, or Margate.
Size and Limit Restrictions
The size of fish as well as how many fish you can catch in a day depends on the type of fish and the time of year. For example, Tautog must be at least 15 inches from snout to tail. You may catch up to four of them a day until the end of April. When Tautog season starts up again in August, you will be limited to just one per day for the first three and a half months. Winter Flounder and Weakfish, on the other hand, are considered open season, with size limits in place.
